COALITION POUR LA DÉFENSE DES DROITS HUMAINS VIVANT DANS LES CAMPS DE RÉFUGIÉS (CDH/VICAR)

CDH/VICAR mourns the tragic deaths of two Burundian refugees, Rémi and Sawuli, who were brutally attacked while seeking food outside the Nduta camp in Tanzania. A third young refugee was seriously injured during the same incident. This attack occurred near the Kumbuga market, underscoring the extreme vulnerability of refugees forced to venture outside the camp in search of basic necessities.

The security situation for Burundian refugees in Nduta is increasingly dire. Refugees are prohibited from leaving the camp, yet those who attempt to obtain essential resources face arrest, intimidation, or, as in this case, violent attacks. The authorities’ restrictions on movement exacerbate the already precarious living conditions of these displaced populations.

This tragedy reflects a broader pattern of insecurity and neglect faced by Burundian refugees in Tanzania. The lack of adequate protection and oversight leaves them exposed to violence, while humanitarian support remains insufficient to meet their daily survival needs.

CDH/VICAR calls on Tanzanian authorities, UNHCR, and humanitarian actors to urgently ensure the protection of Burundian refugees. Immediate action is required to prevent further loss of life, guarantee safe access to food and basic services, and uphold the dignity and rights of all refugees living in Nduta camp.
