COALITION POUR LA DÉFENSE DES DROITS HUMAINS VIVANT DANS LES CAMPS DE RÉFUGIÉS (CDH/VICAR)

For the past four years, refugees from the Great Lakes region living in Kakuma Refugee Camp have endured an increasingly precarious situation. Often referred to as “forgotten refugees,” they face persistent neglect despite international obligations to protect displaced populations. Since 2020, food assistance and other humanitarian services have been repeatedly reduced, leaving refugees vulnerable to hunger, malnutrition, and preventable deaths.

The reduction of aid in Kakuma, a camp located in a harsh desert environment in Kenya, has had dramatic consequences. Families struggle to feed themselves, and children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly at risk. The scarcity of essential resources has created a humanitarian emergency that demands immediate attention from governments and aid organizations.

Refugees are urgently calling for action to ensure their survival. They appeal to contributing countries, humanitarian agencies, and the international community to restore adequate food rations, healthcare services, and access to basic necessities. Without such intervention, the lives and dignity of thousands of vulnerable refugees remain in jeopardy.

CDH/VICAR emphasizes the responsibility of the international community to uphold its commitments to displaced persons. Immediate restoration of humanitarian aid, monitoring of assistance programs, and long-term support measures are critical to prevent further suffering and deaths in Kakuma Refugee Camp.
